Sprint's HTC EVO 4G is world's first 3G/4G WiMAX Android smartphone


Today Sprint officially launched the HTC EVO 4G, an Android powered smartphone that's chock full of premium hardware.

The EVO runs Android 2.1, with an enhanced HTC Sense custom Sense user interface and Friendstream, and has a 4.3-inch 800 x 480 pixel resolution display, a forward-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8 megapixel camera with 720p video recording capabilities, and 1GB of RAM inside. The EVO 4G even has HDMI video-out for streaming content on your HDTV. It's also capable of sharing its connection with 8 other WiFi equipped devices.

Other unique features include a tap-and-hold support within the browser for copy/paste, sharing, and translating.

The EVO 4G sports rounded edges and a glossy black finish. The back of the device, home to the camera and flash, also has a kickstand for when you want to leave the device on a desk to stream YouTube HD, SprintTV, or to watch other video content.

The EVO 4G will be available in Sprint retail channels and in RadioShack, Best Buy, and Walmart, this summer. Pricing will be announced at a later date, but you can register for your EVO 4G at sprint.com/evo.

AT&T to offer 3G OpenTablet touchscreen computer


Today AT&T announced that, through a partnership with OpenPeak Inc., it will offer the OpenTablet, a touchscreen tablet. The device will run on AT&T's 3G network.

The 228.6mm x 127mm x 15mm (9in x 5in x .59in) device also supports 802.11b/g/n WiFi connections, runs on an Intel Atom processor, and has a 6-inch LED backlit display. The computer appears to have a proprietary operating system, and includes HDMI-out and a microSD card slot as well.

AT&T hasn't gone into specifics, but it appears the device is "based on" the Open Tablet 7 tablet, also created by OpenPeak Inc.

AT&T hopes owners use the device to access social networks, navigate, download books, and access email and multimedia. AT&T says it will also support home security systems and energy consumption management tools. The device will have an "App Shop" for installing other apps.

Pricing has not yet been announced, but AT&T expects it will be available in late 2010.

Samsung launches Android 2.1 powered W9600 Beam projector smartphone


Today Samsung announced the W9600 Beam, the successor to the Samsung Haptic Beam, for the Korean smartphone market.

The 56mm x 116mm x 15.7mm (2.2in x 4.5in x 0.6in) W9600 Beam has a 3.3-inch 800 x 480 pixel resolution AMOLED display that Samsung says is 1.5 times brighter than the one offered on the original Haptic Beam phone.

The W9600 Beam also comes equipped with a 5 megapixel camera and a projector, which can be used to display presentations, or even to project a movie up on the wall. It offers a 1,200mAh battery as well as up to 11GB of internal memory tha can be upgraded to 16GB via a microSD card.

The W9600 Beam also runs the latest Android 2.1 operating system. As we noted in our hands-on video back at Mobile World Congress, the device also has a custom Samsung user-interface on top of Android 2.1.

Samsung did not announce pricing.

Sony Ericsson debuts Spiro with Walkman feature phone


Today Sony Ericsson announced the Spiro with Walkman feature phone. As the name implies, the phone runs the Sony Walkman media player functionality to users.

The 92mm x 48mm x 16.75mm (3.6in x 1.88in x 0.65in) Spiro comes equipped with the Walkman music player, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth support, the Obigo Q7 web browser, and a 2.2-inch 320 x 240 pixel display. It also supports microSD cards up to 16GB in size.

The Spiro will be available in contrast black, sunset pink, spring green, and stealth black and is expected to be land on retail shelves in select markets in the third quarter of 2010. Sony Ericsson did not provide carrier or pricing details.

Sony Ericsson releases Zylo with Walkman feature phone with FLAC support


Today Sony Ericsson announced the Zylo with Walkmnan feature phone, one of two new devices in Sony Ericsson's Walkman family of phones.

The Zylo with Walkman offers the Walkman music player and is among the first devices to feature FLAC audio playback support. The player also offers TrackID, and the PlayNow music store. Zylo provides easy access to both Facebook and Twitter, and lets users share their photos to Flickr and Picasa, and upload videos to YouTube in just two clicks.

The 103mm x 52mm x 16mm (4.0in x 2.0in x .62in) Zylo comes equipped with a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth support, Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support, a 2.6-inch 320 x 240 pixel display, and up to 16GB of microSD storage.

Sony Ericsson expects the Zylo to be available in select markets in the third quarter of 2010, and the phone will be available in Jazz Black, Chacha Silver, and Swing Pink. Pricing has not yet been announced.

Nokia outs E5, an S60 QWERTY smartphone for mobile professionals


Today Nokia announced the E5, the company's latest Eseries phone that's targeted at mobile professionals. The E5 follows other popular executive devices such as the E72 and the E63, and it offers the ability to reconfigure its user interface for business and personal life at the tap of a button.

The E5 supports 90 percent of the world's corporate email servers including Mail for Exchange, IBM Lotus Notes Traveler, as well as personal IMAP/POP accounts. The phone appears to have a revamped homescreen over the aforementioned E63 and E72, with the ability to dial out contacts at the click of a button by selecting their contact photo. It also sports a 5 megapixel camera with flash and auto-focus.

The phone offers a metal chrome-colored backplate, and will be available in white, black, and baby blue.

Samsung u820 Reality QWERTY feature phone lands on Verizon Wireless


Today Samsung announced the Reality, a feature phone, for Verizon Wireless. The Reality offers a full horizontal slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3-inch 400 x 240 pixel resolution display, a 3.2 megapixel camera, a microSD card slot for up to 16GB of storage, and an HTML browser.

Verizon Wireless also added VZ Navigator for turn-by-turn directions, visual voice mail, its media center application, and quick access to social networking services.

The device will be available on April 22nd 2010.

Sony Ericsson Kurara have a 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 8.1-megapixel autofocus camera and run Symbian S60.

The Sony Ericsson Kurara is said to sport a 3.5" AMOLED touchscreen and an 8MP camera. The cool part is that the camera will also be able to record HD video.

That camera is also capable of recording HD-quality video, which we're assuming means 720p footage. In cross section the Kurara resembles a Sony CyberShot camera, indeed. Known specifications are scant, though it's apparently been confirmed that there's no USB connector (which likely means yet another appearance of Sony Ericsson’s proprietary port).
